    MIKE NOCK

From stowing away on a boat to Sydney, to winning a scholarship from Down Beat magazine to attend Berklee College of Music, to establishing himself in the American heartlands of jazz, Mike Nock’s story has always been one of fierce ambition, determination, and remarkable talent. The composer's seven-decade career has seen him play with an enormous breadth of musical luminaries including Yusef Lateef, Art Blakey, Johnny O’Keefe, Dionne Warwick, and Michael Brecker.

Recorded Music NZ is proud to honour Dame Hinewehi Mohi as its 2024 inductee into Te Whare Taonga Puoro o Aotearoa | New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Hall is to serve as an ongoing platform to recognise and celebrate the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution and development of Aotearoa music.

Dame Hinewehi was celebrated at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards on Thursday 30 May. She was inducted by fellow Te Whare Taonga Puoro o Aotearoa inductee Moana Maniapoto, and performed a special version of ‘Kotahitanga’ with an all-star ensemble that included Stan Walker, Drax Project, Rob Ruha, Maisey Rika, Jordyn with a Why and MOHI.

2024 is a huge year for Dame Hinewehi Mohi. As well as being inducted into the Hall of Fame, it marks 25 years since both the release of her Jaz Coleman produced debut album Oceania and that much-discussed Rugby World Cup match, in 1999. It also marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of her Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust, and 5 years since the Waiata Anthems project began.

Dame Hinewehi was instrumental in the launch and success of Waiata Anthems, which has seen a number of local artists supported to translate and perform their songs in te reo Māori.

A strong memory for some may be performing Mohi and Coleman’s song ‘Kotahitanga’ at Jump Jam at primary school. Dame Hinewehi is currently working with Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust to reclaim the world’s largest haka (4028 people) from France, at an event at Eden Park on 29 September 2024.
